Rethinking Sepsis: The Promise of Global Clinical Surveillance

sepsis awareness monthIn the hour it took to produce our October 11 webinar, “Rethinking Sepsis: The Promise of Global Clinical Surveillance,” 186 more people died of sepsis. Despite years of intense focus from global initiatives, sepsis remains at the top of hospital priority issues as we work to detect sepsis and resulting patient deterioration earlier.

Over the last six weeks, we’ve recognized Sepsis Awareness Month (September) and continued our sepsis focus with these resources:

  • The webinar addressed how global clinical surveillance. can transform sepsis management. With our partners achieving proven results including a 29% reduction in sepsis mortality, we believe the Rothman Index (RI) can provide objective, timely, and effective data to flag patients who warrant closer clinical attention – for sepsis, or any reason. • In her blog, nursing and information technology expert Wendy Deibert, EMBA, BSN, RN, discusses “The Center of Our Sepsis Challenge,” to imagine stepping up to a world with centralized sepsis surveillance, where real time, proactive processes provide dashboard views to focus clinician attention, and a highly-specialized staff monitors hundreds of patients and eliminates the burden of house-wide staff training.

  • A recent Journal of Critical Care article co-authored by Michael Rothman describes how predictive analytics behind the RI helps with two problems and can lead to more timely care delivery: “Sepsis as 2 problems: Identifying sepsis at admission and predicting onset in the hospital using an electronic medical record–based acuity score.”

  • Our FAQ sheet, “Sepsis and Clinical Surveillance with the Rothman Index” reviews common issues with identifying sepsis accurately without over-alerting and how Houston Methodist Hospital has been able to decrease its sepsis mortality by 17% despite already having an aggressive sepsis-screening program in place.

  • Our white paper, “Improving Sepsis Outcomes Through Earlier Recognition,” describes how PeraHealth incorporates vital signs and labs, as well as nursing assessments, which are known to be leading indicators of deterioration. We calculate scores continuously, needing no additional documentation.

  • Our infographic displays how the RI helps detect subtle patient deterioration with fewer false positives and continuous, real-time intelligence.

Let’s continue working together to predict and prevent sepsis in new and creative ways.
